Single Crystal Diffraction from Powders
RED comes in two modules; Data collection and Data processing.
With RED you turn your TEM into a single crystal diffractometer for powders, i.e. for sub-micron sized crystals.
The RED Data collection program
is installed on a TEM (presently JEOL2100, 2200, 2010 and 3010 series)
It includes functions for aligning the TEM for collecting rotation electron diffraction data, combining goniometer tilt and beam tilt.
No extra hardware needed. Options include: one or several exposure times at every orientation,
user-defined step size and range of beam tilt and goniometer tilt. Typical time for data collection is 1-2 hours
using 0.1 degree steps of beam tilt, total tilt range from -70 to +70 degrees (1400 frames).
The RED Data processing program
Peak hunting on all frames, combining all frames into one 3D reciprocal lattice. This reciprocal lattice can be freely rotated in all directions.
Slices of reciprocal space (for example the hk0, hk1, h0l, 0kl planes etc.) can be selected and viewed.
Merges peaks on several consecutive frames into one reflection. Finds unit cell.
Indexes all reflections and outputs a list of hkl,Intensity. This list of reflections can be used as input
for any standard crystallography program for solving and refining crystal structures.
